Tom Cruise is over the moon about the massive success of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth chapter in the action-packed franchise that’s been thrilling fans for nearly three decades. In a heartfelt post on social media, Cruise called the Memorial Day weekend “one for the history books,” and it’s easy to see why!

.

The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie and billed as Cruise’s last ride as Ethan Hunt, pulled in a jaw-dropping $77 million domestically over the four-day holiday weekend, beating the previous franchise record set by Mission: Impossible – Fallout in 2018 ($61 million). Worldwide, it raked in $190 million, including $127 million from 64 international markets. Not too shabby for a movie with a $400 million price tag!

Cruise didn’t hold back his gratitude, writing, “Most of all, THANK YOU to audiences everywhere for whom we all serve and for whom we all LOVE to entertain.” He also gave a shout-out to Paramount for their support over the years and praised the cast and crew for pouring their hearts into making the film a wild, cinematic ride.

The movie’s big win helped make this Memorial Day weekend one for the record books, with total domestic ticket sales hitting $260.8 million. It went head-to-head with Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, which pulled in a massive $341 million globally, but The Final Reckoning held its own. Fans loved it, giving it an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore, with older audiences (54% over 55) and younger ones (18% aged 18-24) both showing up in droves.

The buzz started early with a splashy premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where the film got a five-minute standing ovation. That energy carried through to places like India, where it’s already Cruise’s biggest opener ever, earning Rs 77.10 crore in just 11 days and outpacing any non-Marvel, non-Avatar Hollywood debut.

Sure, the budget’s huge, but folks in the know are betting on Cruise’s star power and the franchise’s loyal fanbase to make it a win for Paramount. As Chris Aronson, Paramount’s distribution chief, put it, “A record opening on the eighth movie? That’s incredible. It shows how much people love this series.”

So, is this really the end for Ethan Hunt? Cruise has been dodging that question with a grin, telling Variety, “I’d rather people just see it and enjoy.” For now, fans are eating it up, and with summer 2025 looking like a hot season for movies, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is proof that a great blockbuster can still get the world excited.
